Windsor’s Bingo Industry Group, also known as
BIG is taking steps to send a clear message to its
customers, employees, volunteers and the
community at large. "The message is simple" says
John Fairley, V.P. of Operations, Classic Bingo
Country and a member of the BIG committee.
"Gambling addiction is an issue which will not
be ignored. Through our partnership
with Windsor Regional Problem Gambling
Services, BIG is taking bold action to heighten
awareness and reduce problem gambling in the Windsor area."
BIG is a committee made up of bingo hall management, charity
representatives and City of Windsor administration. Problem Gambling
Services has partnered with BIG to develop a responsible gambling program
aimed at heightening awareness amongst bingo patrons, employees,
volunteers and the community at large. To date, our collaborative effort has
resulted in the creation of two problem gambling prevention posters now
displayed in all Windsor area bingo halls. The presence of educational
brochures has also been introduced as a customer resource. Secondly,
Problem Gambling Services and BIG have agreed to publish The Chase as a
joint venture. The newsletter will be published three times per year with a
distribution of 80,000 copies per issue. A third component of the strategy will
involve a training session for thousands of charity personnel, hall
employees and related city staff. Development and implementation
of the training will begin in the near future.
Windsor Regional Problem Gambling Services commends the local
bingo industry for initiating a problem gambling strategy while in
the midst of declining revenues, reduced hours of operation and in
some cases, complete hall closures. Windsor is first out of the gate
to take such a responsible step. Care providers and bingo operators
throughout Ontario are watching closely as BIG leads the way for
responsible gambling among Ontario’s charitable gaming sector.
