Problem Gambling Services is a service of Windsor Regional Hospital’s Mental Health and Addiction Program. It is funded by the Ministry of Health through the Ontario Substance Abuse Bureau. Out-patient treatment services for addicted gamblers and family members has been available in our area since 1994. The experience of working with over 2,000 clients to date has allowed us to continuously improve and expand programs to provide Essex County with the best possible care. While maintaining an innovative approach to treatment, it is now time to broaden our public education mandate.

Many residents in Essex County say they want a better understanding of problem gambling. They ask our staff, "can someone really develop a dependency on gambling?” or "how serious can the consequences of a gambling addiction get?” and "can people really overcome compulsive gambling?"

A Study by the Problem Gambling Research Group, University of Windsor in 1996 revealed that more than half the people living in Essex County do not know who to contact for information or assistance.
While we hope that this has improved since that time,

Problem Gambling Services understands the need to raise awareness and promote early intervention for those who need help. Our response is ‘The Chase’, a quarterly newsletter which we hope you will find interesting and informative.

The Chase is not intended to advocate for or against gambling, but rather inform the reader through current information on problem gambling and related services. We encourage reader feedback. If you have questions you would like answered, comments, ideas for future issues or personal experiences to share, please contact us. If you work with an agency that has been impacted by problem gambling, we want to hear from you.
Women and Gambling is the focus of our first issue. Subsequent issues will focus on specific topics and will highlight individuals from our community who have chosen to share their personal experiences with us.
