Windsor Regional Problem Gambling Services
Issue 1, 2006
For the twelfth consecutive year, the demand for problem gambling services in Windsor-Essex continues to grow. Over the years, thousands of residents have come to us for help. Collectively they have lost over one hundred million dollars. These figures do not surprise us. Like other addictions, those that come forward requesting help represent the minority. The majority are those we are still waiting to see.

Over the past year, individuals receiving out-patient services have increased by 17%, from 521 to 610. Approximately one-third of these people are family members getting help, with or without the problem gambler in treatment. Thousands of individual counseling sessions have been provided, as well as hundreds of group sessions.

In the previous issue of ‘The Chase’, Dr. Miller, consulting psychiatrist with our program reported on a new provincial pilot program at Problem Gambling Services. This initiative involves the provision of residential treatment and intensive day treatment for any resident of Ontario. Thanks to the skills and competence of our program development team, the client feedback has been outstanding. Ninety-eight gamblers have completed the new program and the demand continues to grow. We are now scheduling admissions two months in advance. The pilot program will conclude September 30, 2006 at which time the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care will announce permanent plans for this level of treatment in the Province.

Services for family/friends continues to be a priority. A variety of group options are available Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Our two day family workshops (Saturday & Sunday) are provided once per month and are encouraged for any family/friend who has been impacted by a loved one’s gambling. Contact our office for more information about these services.

In closing I would like to commend the hundreds of clients who put their trust in our staff of Windsor Regional Hospital over the past year. We have met some of the nicest people our community has to offer and have enjoyed working with you. To the majority - we’re ready when you are.

Five years ago, the number 1 concern facing all gambling establishments was the issue of apotential smoking ban

Today the number 1 concern is the rapid growth of internet gambling. What was a 600 million dollar industry a few short years ago is now a $12 billion U.S. Market
